Women's soccer is not an olympic sport

Men's soccer at the Summer Games has had age restrictions for many years. The age cutoff for Barcelona's last games was 23 years. The age cutoff was increased to 24 for 2021. It is also not required that club teams release their male players for the Olympics. That means that star players such as Neymar and Lionel Messi will not be playing for Brazil or Argentina in Tokyo 2021. On the other hand, women's soccer tournaments feature full senior national teams with no age restrictions.

But their dominance has also come with a certain amount of backlash. Brazil was fortunate to not win the Olympic gold medal, but their players have struggled under intense public scrutiny. The women's soccer team has been subject to blatant sexism, as well as low salaries. In Brazil, the soccer federation actively opposes calls to promote more support for the sport, especially in the region.

Colombia came into the tournament as the favourite, finishing top of their qualifying group undefeated with five points. The team won two group matches against the United States and drew one with Romania. Colombia had to win the second game against the United States in order to avoid being eliminated. Andres Escobar misjudged the ball and the United States was able to take advantage.
